We looked at two housing options:
One was building an annex in our garden - but you cannot claim housing benefits for letting property to a relative within your own curtilage.
The other was buying an existing property, locally.
In the end we opted for buying locally, because this means we can charge rent , and that rent is then reimbursed through Universal credit/ (Housing benefit element) giving us a small return on investment.
Oddly enough, this is more expensive for the state in terms of direct payments, due to the need for overnight care, but I guess they know what they are doing.
